Facebook Ads for Small Businesses: Where to Start

For a small business, Facebook ads can bring in new customers quickly, but they can also burn through a budget if they are not set up properly. Here are the basics we recommend to every Shopify store owner before they start.

Know your numbers first

Work out how much a new customer is worth to you and how much you can afford to spend to win one. This keeps your ad budget grounded in real business results rather than clicks or likes.

Keep your audience simple

Start with a broad audience in your location, plus retargeting for people who have visited your store. Facebook’s delivery system is good at finding buyers when it has a clear goal and enough room to learn.

Test a few creatives, not dozens

Run two or three different ads with different images, videos or headlines. Let them run long enough to gather data, keep the winners and replace the rest.

Track sales, not just clicks

Set up the Meta Pixel and Conversions API on your Shopify store and track purchases as your main result. This is the only reliable way to know which ads are making money.

Fix the store before scaling

If people click but do not buy, the problem is often the store rather than the ad. Clear product pages, fast mobile loading and a smooth checkout make your ads far more profitable.
